The ethics of confidentiality in a new role

You are the newest (and youngest) employee to join a boutique wealth management company. The person you are replacing (Antonio) was poached by a competitor and didn’t leave a lot of time to handover.

Upon cleaning out Antonio’s desk and files, you come across a client list that looks like it was sent to him from the company he is now working at and is marked ‘strictly confidential’. The list includes client names, contract details and figures that could be beneficial to you as you build your client base in your new role, and also to your company.

 What would you do?

We challenge you to create a healthy discussion with your colleagues and post a comment below. You could even encourage them to consider taking The Banking and Finance Oath!

Please share your ethical dilemmas with us - we can post them anonymously. You can email your dilemmas to dilemma@thebfo.org

The client list doesn’t appear to be your property. I would hand it in to your General Counsel with a recommendation that Antonio be contacted to clarify its authenticity. If your suspicions are confirmed the document should be returned to Antonio’s employer, via an appropriate channel. No copies should be retained.
