The Ethics of Opportunities

by Anonymous

You have the opportunity to take up a more senior role in the gambling and alcohol division of a company that has recently faced considerable backlash, including reputational damage, regulatory backlash, fines and an ongoing investigation.

It is a substantial salary increase for you, particularly as you currently donate 10% of your salary to a preferred charity. It is also a significant step up in responsibility and you will be leading a small team. The experience gained, salary and responsibility are a one-off – you’re unlikely to find a role like this in the short-medium term.

What would you do?

Should you take the role?

I know I am lucky to have so much choice but I would not work in those areas.
Even sales in banking required too much compromise for me.
I did ask the CEO of a very large gaming company how he could do the job he did. His answer was it was better for someone to run the business ethically as he felt he did, than someone else run it unethically.
However I would prefer not to be involved in marketing something that potentially brings harm to some of your clients lives. More money, experience and responsibility isn’t enough it’s about job satisfaction in your own terms.

I would not take the role, I think gambling and alcohol addictions are serious problems that plagues our societies today, so contributing to these problems does not make sense to me personally.
