2020 Young Ambassador Michelle Lim, Senior Consultant, Trust & Risk - Culture and Accountability, PwC

The main reason I chose to go into financial services is that the industry has such immense potential to shape the future of the world. I would love to play a key role into ‘nudging’ the industry into thinking about the ethics behind decisions (that I know are not always black and white) as well as help and empower our communities to grow sustainably.

As a Young Ambassador I want to participate in and encourage conversations about how the industry can use innovation to create solutions that will not only benefit the community, but also the industry too. I truly believe that there is room for a symbiotic relationship that is yet to be discovered and explored.

Coming from a psychology and neuroscience background I have always been intrigued and fascinated by how a person’s behaviour is shaped, manipulated and adapted by their surrounding environment – this is especially true in today’s financial sector climate. Being a BFSO Young Ambassador gives me the opportunity to gain further insight into the decisions and behaviours that people make on a daily basis. This will provide me with a deeper understanding on how these actions may consequently impact society, the community and the finance sector. I want to use this knowledge to advocate for what The BFSO stands for, and effectively apply these behavioural insights to prevent future risk and help carve out a space where integrity, trust and ethics is at the forefront of our minds and behaviours.

In a post-Hayne world I hope to see changes in attitudes and perspectives within financial services. This will ultimately lead to behaviour and conduct. The Royal Commission was an excoriating experience, not just for banks and financial services, but for those working within professional services too. I am optimistic that over time we will see some positive change in a post-Hayne world. I don’t think you could go through something like that without coming out changed at the other end of it.
