The ethics of social media... what would you do?

As the manager of a small close-knit team in a large financial services institution, one of your team members has made you aware the new employee in your team has a sexually explicit Instagram account, and that others in the broader business division are gossiping about this individual.

You approach HR who express concern the gossip might be interpreted as workplace harassment and direct you to the social media policy. The policy is not clear or prescriptive about what you should do in this situation.

What would you do?

  • For more insight on this topic, you might like to check out 'The Social Dilemma' on Netflix. It takes a close look at the negative unintended consequences from something that started out as having reasonably good intentions.

We challenge you to create a healthy discussion with your colleagues and post a comment below. You could even encourage them to consider taking The Banking and Finance Oath!

Please share your ethical dilemmas with us - we can post them anonymously. You can email your dilemmas to dilemma@thebfo.org

On one hand what someone does on a personal social media account is their own business; yet it gets trickier the higher up the food chain in an organisation. If that person is identified as a representative of the organisation, their social media accounts become an advertisement to the organisation itself and its values.
